First Flame | Cinnamon Roll Flavored Coffee

The farmer took Wolf to the small village of Wickbarrow, a lonely haven coated in a veil of fog. Chilled mist crept along the muddied roads like serpents. Thin layers of smoke climbed above the thatched rooftops into the darkening skies. Children watching the strange knight’s arrival were jerked away. The shutters slammed and locked. Wolf’s rescuer halted his cart and the knight dropped to the ground. “We don’t have much in the way of food or shelter,” the farmer said, “but you’re welcome to the barn. I’ll have my boy bring some food and drink.” Wolf nodded and eyed the barn. A humble building with battered wood walls sat beside a mill. Its large wheel creaked and churned within. Wolf entered and sat alone with his broken sword across his knees. His splintered shield rested beside him. The once regal knight fought to recall the faintest memory of how he’d gotten to this strange place. Food and drink came. Thoughts soon fell to exhaustion and Wolf fell into a restless sleep. Late into the night, the Hearthhorns shifted in the fog, their harness bells giving the faintest chime. Frost silvered the gaps between the boards. His breath showed in the dark. Then the frost near the door began to weep. A slow, unnatural warmth crept through the barn: gentle, yet eerily unsettling. In the dark behind his thoughts, something whispered: “There you are. Oh hollow thing wearing a knight’s skin.”
